RLC Blog Buzz: Paying for Adoption

July 19, 2008

This week’s RLC Blog Buzz question is:

“How do I do this, moneywise?  I want to adopt, but it seems so overwhelming.  We don’t really have $20,000 in the bank, ya know!”  Please blog about your experience, ideas, insight, fundraisers and other ideas that worked for you while raising your adoption money.

I think this questions weighs heavy on everyone’s mind in the beginning stages. Statistics show us that 39% of the US population said they had very or somewhat seriously considered adopting a child at one point in their lives. Only 2% every do and I’m sure that the money issue is a large part of that.

There are a couple other posts I’ve already done that you should read first:

Debt Free Adoption

God’s Blessings

The cost of adoption is going to vary widely depending on where you adopt from, the agency you use, etc. We are adopting two kids and so the cost is a little higher (but not double). In the end when you count everything from getting copies of birth certificates, shots, agency fees, travel, etc. our adoption will cost us $28,000. (Roughly $7,000 of that will be travel costs – flying to Ethiopia isn’t cheap.)

As I stated in my post about a Debt Free Adoption, we committed to completing this adoption without incurring any debt. We knew that might mean selling a car, sell the spa, getting a second job, whatever it took we were just trusting in God.

When we started the process we had about half of the total we needed in our savings. That leaves roughly $14,000 and we needed God to show up big time. Of course he does :-)

We had a huge garage sale with two other adoptive couples. We took donations from friends, family, neighbors. In the end we had about 2 garage fulls of stuff. We had two weekend sales at two different locations for a total of 4 days. We raised $5200. Since then we’ve had one other family garage sale as well.

We’ve sold stuff on ebay. My husband has quite a collection of golf clubs going in the garage that have been waiting to be sold. He’ll find bargains at the thrift stores and clean them up and sell them. I’ve gone through the house and my scrapbooking supplies. So far we’ve made at least $1,000.

I do web and graphic design and I have had quite a few freelance jobs in the last several months that have brought in some extra money as well.

We have cut out a bunch of unnecessary expenses. We hardly ever eat out, I’ve been watching the grocery ads carefully, we’ve cut out all that “extra” spending on impulse items.

We’ve applied for a grant (still waiting to hear) and we also have a “donation grant” set up through Kingdom Kids. This allows people to contribute to our adoption expenses and receive a tax deduction as KK is a 501c3 organization.

Like another RLC blogger mentioned, the expenses don’t just all come at once, which helps in the budgeting. The majority of them are little things here and there that we have always been able to pay for out of checking or savings. Our agencies fees are paid in two sections. One was back in January, the other will be due when we travel. The airline tickets will also be a large expense at once.

We also had friends and family really bless us with an “adoption shower” where we received a ton of the things we need to be ready for the kids.

Bottom line, don’t let money stand in the way if you feel God calling you to adopt. If you are faithful with your finances I truly believe that he will bless you.

You can read all of my posts that have to do with paying for adoption here.

UPDATED: I do not want to, in any way, come across as judging those who use a loan of some sort to pay for their adoption. Adoption is a very personal choice, for some even a calling. Financial stewardship is also very personal and our debt-free commitment follows the debt-free lifestyle we have been living for the last eight years. While the Bible warns repeatedly about debt, it is not a sin (although I believe that poor money management is). If a loan is part of your adoption financing, I would encourage you to look into one of the interest free adoption loans through organizations like The Abba Fund.

Shower of Blessings

May 31, 2008

The adoption shower last night was so much fun and we are so blessed by the friends and family that came. A HUGE thank you to Stacey for doing this for us. This is the second time she’s done such a shindig for me – she threw me a surprise shower when I was pregnant for Natalie. She’s had a crazy week with sick kids, dr. appts, and getting ready to go on the high school mission trip but she still found time to put this together. Her mom opened up their beautiful home for the night and we had a blast.

We ate yummy food and then quizzed all the ladies on their Ethiopian Trivia Knowledge. I was pretty impressed that both Grandmas got 6 out of 8 questions right! (Although MeeMaw cheated and asked Natalie the answer to one of them. Lucky for her Natalie is a good guesser.) :-)

Jen’s surprise was AWESOME! There is an African tradition called Blessing Cards. She handed each of the ladies rwo 4×6 sized card w/ a hole punched in one corner and they each wrote a special prayer or verse or blessing – one for W-boy and one for B-girl. Then, for each child, they chose two matching beads. One bead is attached to the card and then the other bead is strung on a string for the child. How cool is that? There’s a picture in the video below.

The cake was beautiful and yummy as I knew it would be. I asked for chocolate and said “Can you work peanut butter in there somehow?” So Michelle did a peanut butter mousse in the middle and some peanut butter in the frosting. It was delicious! (Hm, I’m thinking I’ll head to the refrigerator for some leftovers after this.)

We were totally blessed by all the gifts we received – bikes, scooters and helmets for both kids, clothes, pajamas, socks, sheets, games and coloring stuff to do on the plane, books, CD players, hair stuff (yeah!), a Frog Pod, wallets for the boys and purses for the girls and tons of gift cards. I am amazed and forever grateful.

So here’s some pictures from our fun night.

Frugal Adoption

April 16, 2008

My honey would be proud. Frugal won over impatience.

Today I took our dossier to FedEx. First I chose overnight-afternoon over overnight-by noon thinking that would save me some bucks. Then they guy told me it would be $49. (It was a heavy box – lots of paper.) Or I could send it 2 day and have it there by Friday for $21. I hemmed and hawed for a minute or two, sighed and said “2 day please”.

Arriving on Friday afternoon probably means that nothing will happen to it that day but maybe it will be fresh on their minds on Monday morning :-)

Garage Sales, Police & Dumpster Diving

April 5, 2008

Well it was weekend two of the big garage sale and we held it at our house – our first time to do a garage sale in this neighborhood.

We set up around 6 on Friday morning and then set hubby out to put up signs in the neighborhood. We had pretty nice looking signs on stakes for the ground. Plus my dad had loaned us a few metal a-frame signs. We do it high class around here, I tell you.

Well about 9:30 one of our shoppers tells us that he saw the town police taking down our garage sale signs. I was afraid he’d get my dad’s good signs so I sent Mark out to figure out what was up. Well he found the cop (or the cop found him, not sure) and come to find out that our town does not allow ANY garage sale signage except for on your own personal property (like that does any good if you don’t live ON the main road). The cop told Mark, after he asked, where he had pitched his signs so he went dumpster diving and managed to retrieve them.

I called our town city hall to get some clarification and was told that we could not have them on town “right of ways” (meaning all the main roads) but that if our HOA allowed it we could do them in our subdivision. Friday night a few of our signs still remained inside the neighborhood so we assumed she was correct.

So Saturday morning we put a few more up in the neighborhood but were careful to avoid the main road. Luckily some other people didn’t know about the rule either and put up signs which helped us for a bit until Mr. Macho Cop decided to make his rounds again.

So what did our creative husbands do? Mark and Gary decided to put themselves to good use and the stood out on the main road holding and waving our garage sale signs :-) They were probably out there a good 30 minutes.

But low and behold the police car pulls up to our very busy garage sale about 10:00 a.m. and tells us we can’t have any signs except for on our corner and that the people at city hall don’t know what they’re talking about and “he’ll set them straight”. So they guys left their posts to pull the rest of the signs (lest we get ticketed).

We had a trickle of people after that but started packing up stuff around noon. It’s all going to a friend’s house. We are garage sale’d out!!!!!

So for the two weekends (total of 4 days). The GRAND TOTAL IS…….

$5200

Woo Hoo and Praise God!

Jen’s house was definitely the best of our locations – we made $3800 that weekend, $1400 this weekend. We did have most of our big ticket item sales at her house but is still amazing how much you make a few bucks at a time.

It’s multiplying like bunny rabbits

April 1, 2008

So Jen and Kim came over today so that we could price the remaining garage sale items and we all 3 decided that the stuff is multiplying like bunny rabbits.

Plus we got even MORE donations today from Shannon and her mom and Amy. Yeah gals!

My garage is full, there is not even a walkway any more. I thought I’d let you see…

The new stuff (that wasn’t out last weekend)

This is the leftovers from last weekend PLUS an entire trailer full of stuff that is parked in our side yard.

Crazy nuts I tell you…in a good way.

So we decided to do another 2 day sale this weekend – Friday/Saturday. We’ll post the grand total at the end of the weekend!

Garage Sale Day 1

March 28, 2008

We are joining with two other families in the West Valley to have a garage sale w/ proceeds going toward our 3 Ethiopian adoptions. So many friends and family have given an abundance of stuff. Jen was seriously stressing with all the stuff we had stored at our house. We did 7 hours of sale today and will do at least 7 tomorrow. We were blown away with how well we did today. But like Jen I’m not going to tell yet. You’ll have to tune in tomorrow night :-) We’ll give you some pictures too so you can see how much stuff we had.

God’s Blessings

March 5, 2008

A mere six weeks ago I wrote about our commitment to do a “debt free adoption“. I said then “I’m not sure how it will happen but I am totally stoked to see the amazing ways that God will help us earn/find the funds.”

God does NOT disappoint!

We have been so blessed over the last couple of months! Money that we were not expecting has come in. Plus I have got freelance design jobs coming out my ears right now. It means I’m busy, but if that’s how God is going to provide the funds then I’ll take it!

Keep it coming God!

Debt Free Adoption

January 20, 2008

For those of you that know us personally you know much of this story. For those that don’t, I must start by telling you a little bit about our family’s money philosophy. About 7 years ago my husband started listening to Dave Ramsey on the radio and bringing home tidbits of his advice. Dave Ramsey is a talk radio host and financial expert (and also a Christian) who believes in a debt-free lifestyle. His motto, or one of them, is “Live like no one else so later you can LIVE like no one else.” We attended one of his one-day events which led us to beginning his Financial Peace University class at our church about 6 years ago (still going strong).

We paid off all our debt except for our house within about 2 years – credit cards, student loans, cars (sold one of them). Then just a few months ago, in November ‘07 we reached our major goal of paying off our home. We are 100% debt free.

And then God led us to adoption, which is not an inexpensive endeavor. We have savings that will pay for part of it but we do not have all that we need. I began to say “Well, if we have to go into debt to do it, then we will and we’ll pay it off as quick as we can.”

Yet once again God used Dave Ramsey to speak incredible truth into our lives. Last week I was visiting a friend in Pittsburgh. It was late one evening and I was flipping channels when I discovered that the new Dave Ramsey television show was on the Fox Business Chanel. (We don’t get it at home.) I was all excited to see what it was about.

Dave was taking calls from different people. A man called in and explained that he felt God calling him to a career change that meant going back to school and thus, in this man’s eyes, incurring debt. I forget what his actual question was but I will never forget the words that came out of Dave’s mouth. It might not be verbatim but the gist of it was, “If you truly feel like God is calling you to this then I believe that you need to look at creative ways for you to finance your schooling. There is not ONE example in the Bible of God calling someone to do something and then using debt as a tool to accomplish it!”

I think my jaw actually dropped into my lap. How little faith I have had. Sure, I know that God will provide the means but I just assumed some type of loan would be part of that. How could I short change his power by thinking so small?

When I told Mark what I had heard he pretty much said “Well, I’ve been thinking the same thing but I was afraid you’d be upset if I told you.” And he’s probably right :-)

So a debt-free adoption it is! I’m not sure how it will happen but I am totally stoked to see the amazing ways that God will help us earn/find the funds.
