World Water Day

March 22, 2009

Today is World Water Day and Brian Cooper of A Glimmer Foundation is donating one penny for every view that this video gets on YouTube today.

GO WATCH IT!

1 million views = $10,000 = 2 water wells = clean drinking water for 1,000 – 2,000 people for 15 – 20 years

Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all sickness and disease, and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war.

4,500 children will die today from waterborne diseases.

Of the 42,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and a lack of basic sanitation, 90% are children under 5 years old.

Serious Life Magazine

February 2, 2009

seriouslifeI honestly can’t remember how I found out about the Riggs familly – I think a link from another adoption blog. They are a beautiful family with seven kids, 3 of whom are adopted (2 from Guatemala, 1 from Ethiopia). Four year old Abby was diagnosed with Leukema in July and this family has been such a blessing to watch as they struggle through this illness and rely on God. They are an incredible witness.

Brent Riggs publishes a very cool online magazine called Serious.Life.Magazine. They just published the February issue today, and I am in their Featured Blog Directory. It’s a fantastic magazine and I know a lot of my readers would love to check it out.

The magazine includes a lot of great content from bloggers you’ll appreciate, as well as great features, photos and other content.  The magazine gives away a bunch of ads to charities and ministries.  Besides great articles on interesting people, there is a lot about family, adoption, personal finance, spiritual life, humor… all sorts of “life” topics.

Again, the subscription is free, and I know you’ll enjoy the magazine, so take a minute to check it out and sign up to get future issues.  www.seriouslifemagazine.com

Donations for Hope for the Hopeless

December 1, 2008

Now that it is confirmed we are traveling soon, several have asked about donating toward goods we will purchase for the orphanage – Hope for the Hopeless.

The easiest way to do that is by following the link below, then click on the orange “ChipIn” button on the right side. So far we’ve raised $160 ($150 via check).

DONATE

We leave a week from today and we will take whatever money we have with us then and use it to meet whatever needs we see.

By the way, if you are interested in sponsoring one of the kids at Hope for the Hopeless at $20 a month, put a comment below and I will get you more info.

Updated: Got another pledge of $50 coming via check so we’re up to $235. Yeah!

Updated again: Okay, somehow my ChipIn page isn’t showing all the money. We’re up to $325 counting checks! You guys rock!

Dare I Say It?

November 5, 2008

If you’ve been following our blog for any length of time you know that are very good friends Dustin and Jen are also adopting from Ethiopia. They started the process about 7 months before we did and I have to say were probably part of the big kick in the pants that God was giving us.

We have dreamed of traveling together but it never seemed likely. First, because they were waiting for a referral and we had kids from a waiting children list, we assumed that we would be done much quicker. We honestly thought (way back when) that we’d have the kids home by July. Then there was all the paperwork issues and we got stuck in the court closure.

While courts were closed Dustin and Jen received their referral for a beautiful baby boy and then, about a month ago received a tenative travel date of Nov 30 – Dec. 6 A few weeks later we got our court date of Nov. 28th so it seemed obvious that we wouldn’t be going together.

If we pass court, normally our embassy appt (the part you have to be there for) would be on Dec. 24th. But that’s Christmas Eve so we’re not even sure if the embassy is open. I emailed our program coordinator and asked if she thought they would push us up a week (there’s several other families with Dec. 17th embassy dates) or back (but then that’s New Years Eve so same problem). She said they’d probably push us back to Dec. 31st. I was thinking, no problem. I can last another week.

Well, as sad and disappointing as it was, it looks like the fact that Dustin and Jen did not pass court the first time might just make this dream come true. They have a court date of Dec. 2nd. If they pass their embassy date would be December. 17th.

So this weekend I emailed our program coordinator again and begged and pleaded a little to see if she thought there was ANY chance we could move our date to the 17th so that we could travel w/ our friends. While she didn’t confirm it 100%, it seems that maybe we can make it happen.

There is a chance that our paperwork might not get from courts to the embassy in 3 weeks – it has to visit 3 government offices in between to get birth certificates, visas etc. If that happens we would basically have to stay longer – perhaps a few days, perhaps an additional week.

I think we’re willing to risk it for the privilege of traveling with Dustin and Jen. It’s not just sharing the time of being with our kids, but we will be sharing in ministry with them as we go to visit Hope for the Hopeless and perhaps a couple other orphanages. Plus sightseeing in Addis will be way fun with them.

So we are praying earnestly that both of us pass court on our dates and we can be traveling buddies.

Desperate in Ethiopia

October 20, 2008

Our program coordinator pointed us to this link – Desperate in Ethiopia – you must go watch it.

They talk briefly about a product called “Plumpy Nut” which was developed by Doctors Without Borders. There’s a great video with Anderson Cooper that talks more about it.

We HAVE a court date!

October 17, 2008

This post needs a serious drum roll or something.

We finally have a court date – Friday, November 28th!

I am quite literally bouncing off the walls here. Busy calling people and emailing. Yippee!

If we pass court then our embassy appt would normally be Dec. 24th. But, of course, it’s Christmas Eve. So we’re not sure what will happen. If they’ll try and get us in a different day that week, or push us back a week (but then that’s New Year’s Eve). But I’m not going to worry about it for now. Why borrow trouble from tomorrow right?  The first week in January is also a HUGE Ethiopian holiday and so travel at that time is hard (hard to find a place to stay, tickets more expensive, etc.)

Regardless we know God will work it all out for good!

Waiting…again

October 14, 2008

Waiting is the name of the adoption game and that is exactly what we are doing around here. We are currently waiting for a court date to be assigned to us. Last week several Hope families got a date of November 17th. So we know we’ll be sometime after that date.

The court date is when W-boy and B-girl will “officially” become ours…if we pass. Sometimes something comes up and you don’t pass the first time, but we’ll cross that bridge if we come to it. When we do pass we can FINALLY post pictures and video up here for all of you to see. I can’t wait!

Approximately four weeks after you pass court you have your Embassy date with the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa. That is what we have to be there for. Typically families arrive sometime during the weekend, pick up your kids, have the embassy appt on Wed and then leave for home around Friday or so – about a 7 day trip. We are actually hoping to go for a little bit longer so that we can visit with Hope for the Hopeless.

We’re not sure what happens around Christmas time. We know the Embassy is closed for a couple of days but we don’t know what that means for their appts. Not much use speculating on all of that at this point.

For now it looks like the kids won’t be home before Christmas but we could be picking them up over Christmas or right after. Somehow I think Noah and Natalie wouldn’t mind celebrating Christmas a little early before we left :-)
